Purpose Over Profit: Finding Your Why

If I’m completely honest, my path to becoming an entrepreneur wasn’t entirely by design. A long-term contract came to an end (not unexpectedly i might add, but I was definitely in denial that it was coming) and I was left thinking ‘well, what now’. While I wasn’t sure of my next move, there was one thing I was sure of; I'd had taste of the freedom and flexibility that came with remote contract work and I just couldn’t face going back to a 9 to 5.
I’ve always had ambitions to work for myself, but two things held me back: the fear of failure and I could never see a gap for my skills and experience. But now I knew this was the only path for me, even though I had absolutely no idea of what I was going to do. Call it kismet or fate, it was exactly at this time that I was introduced to the concept of an Online Business Manager. Boom! This was a role that tapped into all the aspects of my career that I’ve enjoyed, and where I excelled: working with clients, strategy development, and making things happen behind the scenes.
Finding motivation & resilience
If you asked me in the early days what my daily motivation was in pursuing this path, in a beat I’d have told you that it was the financial freedom and flexibility to fit work around my lifestyle and not the other way around. There’s nothing wrong with this as a goal, but I knew I needed to hone in on my purpose: that thing that lit a fire in my belly, and that would keep me going on days that were really tough.

Clarity of purpose
So when I came across my old copy of Simon Sinek's 'Start With Why', I gave it another read. This time round it really resonated and my ‘why’ snapped into focus. As an OBM, working exclusively with small business owners and entrepreneurs, I get into the intimate details of their business which has meant the relationships I’ve built with my clients are deeper and more personal than I experienced when working in corporate. I get to witness first-hand the impact I have in my clients' lives and businesses. Watching my clients flourish and knowing I have been part of their journey, has been life affirming.
Partnering with clients, helping them turn their dream business into a reality, that is my 'why'.
This realization has been transformative. It's helped me zero in on my ideal client and clarify what I bring to the table. I’m not going to lie, financial freedom and flexibility are definitely part of the equation, but they’re not my main driving force. To sustain momentum in building a business, you need a ‘why’ that's bigger than yourself.
Knowing your why: your key to success
So, here's my challenge to you: take a moment to reflect on your ‘why’. The life of an entrepreneur is sometimes chaotic, and always challenging, but your ‘why’ will be your North Star. I promise you, when you're clear on your purpose, everything else - from the clients you choose to work with to the services you offer - will fall into place.
